In Maui, you can play one of the courses designed by Robert Trent Jones; enjoy a day in the warm sun and play a golf course like you have never played before. You can stay at the Kaanapali Beach hotel and undertake the short walk to the golf course.

The two courses are a senior golfer’s delight. The South Course has an executive style, but with little complexity whereas the North Course runs through the foothills and along the beach and is thought of as a challenging golf course. It is also home to the PGA Tour.

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, you might like to try the senior golf vacation package to Bermuda. With nine golf courses spread out on twenty-one acres of land, you will find that this is one of the most extraordinary experiences of a lifetime. What You Should Consider When Looking For Assisted Living Facilities

March 6th, 2010 No comments

The differences between what is known as a nursing home and that of Cleveland assisted living facilities are few. The nursing home usually take care of those who need a little assistance to complete care. Where as the assisted living facility cares for those who are sixty years or older that only need assistance with some of their daily activities such as bathing or perhaps getting dressed.

If you are considering something like this for a loved one, before deciding on what to do you should discuss the issue in depth with your family as well as discussing it with your primary care giver. They should be able to assess whether or not you or your loved one should be placed in one of these facilities.

Once you have done that, there are two very important questions you need to ask yourself. What makes you believe that your loved ones way of living should be changed? The other question would be what kind of daily activities do you think they need help with?

After you have answered those two questions you need to consider a load of other questions as well. These questions would pertain to the assisted living facilities you might be researching. Is the facility fully licensed? Do they have insurance that also covers a person personal belongings? Do those who work there react to medical emergencies in a professional and knowledgeable manner? Is there a visitors policy with certain rules they need to adhere to? Does the contract for the assisted living cover everything from accommodations to support services? Can the contract be voided and is there any type of refund? If the needs of your loved one happens to change, will the facility still be willing to offer their services and if care changes with the resident, will the cost change along with it?

One thing you should ask if you can do is see one of the units to get a feel for the place. You also should ask if there are single units as well as double units. This is important because your loved one might not do well in a unit shared with someone else. It is also important to ask if bathrooms are private. Also, if there are some foods or snacks that your loved one loves, ask if the residents are allowed to have food in their unit as well.

Activity is important so you need to find out what kind of activities they have and if there are plenty of volunteers to help out with the activities. Another important personal thing is do they allow pets. It can be traumatic for someone to leave their pet behind, this of course has been their companion.

Another vital thing, is find out if the food that is served is nutritional and if they also offer snacks during the day that are nutritional as well. Find out if the meals are all served at the same time each day or if the resident has the choice of when they want to eat.

Getting a feel for the staff should not be too hard. From the moment you walk into one of these assisted living facilities, you should be able to get a feel for whether or not they are friendly, caring and helpful or if they are cold, uncaring and are there just to pick up a paycheck at the end of the week.

Once you have done your research, the most important thing of all that you need to do is sit down with your relative that might need this type of assistance and get their input. The worst thing you can do is not let them know and just place them in a facility.

Electric Mobility Scooters – An Introduction

March 6th, 2010 No comments

An electric mobility scooter is very much like a motor scooter or an electric scooter in the way it functions and how it is built. An electric mobility scooter has some of the options that a power wheelchair has. That makes the scooter an excellent means of transportation for those having a good degree of arm strength as well as upper body balance. Its use is mainly for those needing assistance occasionally rather than all the time.

Electric mobility scooters are used primarily by anyone who has difficulty walking for any distance. This would include not only the elderly but those suffering from medical conditions that need assistance in getting around. Mobility scooters are not designed to take the place of a wheelchair.

There is nothing complicated about the design of a mobility scooter. There are two rear wheels with a seat placed above them. The users’ feet sit on a flat area which also houses the power source. Some scooters will have one wheel at the front while others will have two wheels depending on the design, along with handlebars on the steering column. For the most part, mobility scooters are electric, powered by rechargeable battery. Gas scooters are uncommon.

An electric mobility scooter operates with either one or two batteries. If you are in an area where you are likely to encounter steep slopes or hills you will be better off having two batteries since the two working together will deliver more power than a single battery. The batteries can be charged with a charger that plugs into a standard wall plug.

The steering column is called a tiller. It of course is located at the front of the scooter. With the tiller, you control direction as well as the speed. It has thumb paddles, finger controls or a switch.

Mobility scooters come with either front or rear wheel drive. The one you choose will depend on the weight of the user and where it is going to be primarily used. The smaller front wheel drive scooter is better for indoor use because of its smaller size. Front wheel drive scooters can hold users up to about 250 pounds.

A rear wheel drive mobility scooter is for use both indoors and outdoors. Since they are larger they can accommodate a weight of up to about 350 pounds. You can also get heavy duty mobility scooters. These are also rear wheel drive and can accommodate a user and equipment weighing up to about 500 pounds

Power scooters have automatic braking systems in place so you don’t have to manually engage the brakes. When the controls are released the scooter automatically stops so there is no worry about it continuing to coast. To increase or decrease speed, you simply gently press or release the controls. You can also set the maximum speed that the scooter can reach which is a good safety feature.

Power mobility scooters are useful for either elderly persons or those with a medical condition that makes it difficult to stand or walk for any length of time. With an electric scooter, these people can maintain their independence, instead of being housebound.

Folding wheelchair ramps are specially designed to safely load or unload electric mobility scooters or motorized wheelchairs from a vehicle or even a house. The best type of ramp is an aluminum loading ramp. These ramps are strong and durable but lightweight enough that they are easy to handle and store.
