What Are My Aging Health Care Options

March 27th, 2010 No comments

Are you in a position where it may be necessary to arrange for aging care? No matter if the place is for yourself or someone you love, determining the best aging care facility is very important. Allow me to share a look at some of the different aging care options and how to select the right facility for your needs.

It is necessary to be aware of that if someone suffers from certain medical conditions they will need very specialised care that’ll make some healthcare choices unwanted. They could include Alzheimer’s or other styles of dementia, care following a massive stroke or cardiac event, or even something such as arthritis, where mobility is in many cases profoundly affected.

Do you feel you’re in good health but need assistance with daily chores and tasks? For anyone who is still mentally aware, have good balance and mobility, and are not in an altered mental state, you could probably remain in your home and simply hire a nurse to come in. This can be great for some health conditions such as diabetes, where some specialised foot care may be needed but overall health is still fairly good.

There are also retirement homes, which may also be called assisted living facilities. These are fantastic if your health is good but you no longer want to live in your home or you want more companionship. One of the biggest problems that many elderly people can face is the feeling of isolation and the depression it can bring. Facilities where you still have your own living quarters but are around other people and can take part in activities may be what you need. Many retirement residences are now installing an alarm system into their residents’ rooms so that if there is a medical emergency, staff can be alerted with the press of a button.

Nursing care facilities may be the next step that you will consider. Normally, a person is admitted into a nursing home when they have significant physical or mental impairments that make any level of self-care impossible. They usually have less segregated living arrangements and activities which are less varied or active. People who are suffering from altered mental states due to disease or the after effects of a stroke may require a room in a nursing facility.

If your loved one is very ill you may be forced to consider palliative care. This can be a heartbreaking decision since, by admitting palliative care is needed you are admitting that there is little to no chance your loved one will get better. Palliative care arrangements should still ensure that your loved one is well cared for and that there is mental or physical stimulation when that is possible. Remember that you never know how long your loved one has left so you should plan for them to be as comfortable as possible for as long they can.

You need to think beyond the immediate situation when determining whether a selected aging care arrangement is good for you. By learning about the aging process and any specific needs you have, you will discover a facility to guide you grow old gracefully and enjoy any remaining years you could have.

Buzz Aldrin Makes Dancing With The Stars History

March 27th, 2010 No comments

Dancing with The Stars features its oldest contestant this season. At 80 years old Buzz Aldrin will be using his moon walking grace to entertain America. July 20, 1969 seems like a long time ago, but Buzz Aldrin is hoping that experience is enough to excite America about space exploration again.

In a recent interview with me, Aldrin – a pre-boomer born in 1930 – allowed that being part of the cast on Dancing With The Stars will draw attention to his former career. This will provide a platform from which Aldrin will be able to divert the spotlight from him and shine it on the need to revitalize the US space program.

Aldrin, in addition to gathering votes for his fancy footwork, hopes to enlist the media to provide a launch pad so he can talk about a subject near and dear to his heart. He believes the kinds of benefits derived from earlier space explorations can be duplicated today by getting countries to cooperate with each other rather than compete for supremacy — wasting time, money and human resources. Aldrin believes America would remain a leader because of the experience it has in the science of space.

The 5-part series (print and audio versions) begins Monday, March 22 on New Seniors Journal, an online magazine for those 65+. Aldrin’s moon experience, his views on the future, personal observations about life – particularly on the responsibilities pre-boomers have to trailing generations – and thoughts about being a competitor on Dancing With The Stars will all be addressed in the series.

Did you ever wonder what happened to the space program after the moon walk? How come the gentlemen who walked on the moon never did so again? Buzz goes into detail and gives his thoughts about what would get the movement going again. There’s one superpower on the planet, it’s time for them to lead the charge again.
