New SAGE Report Examines Issues & Solutions For Aging LGBT Population

April 19th, 2010 No comments

How will American society treat an older lesbian widow who loses her family home because she is not eligible for Social Security survivor benefits?  Answers to questions like those can be found in the latest report from the Services & Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Elders (SAGE) attempts to address these types of issues and provide solutions.  SAGE and the Movement Advancement Project (MAP) in partnership with the American Society on Aging, the National Senior Citizens Law Center, and the Center for American Progress released a new study last month entitled “Improving the Lives of LGBT Older Adults” that aims to comprehensively examine issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT).  The report represents the first major collaboration between LGBT advocacy organizations and aging organizations to examine issues facing LBGT elders.

The report focuses on three specific areas:

1.  LGBT elders are less financially secure. LGBT older adults are poorer and less financially secure than American elders as a whole due to a lifetime of discrimination compounded by major laws and safety net programs that fail to protect and support LGBT elders equally with their heterosexual peers.

2.  LGBT elders find it more difficult to achieve good health and healthcare. The report examines major reasons for this, including: LGBT elders’ health disparities are overlooked; there is limited government support for the families and partners of LGBT elders; health care environments often are inhospitable to LGBT elders; nursing homes often fail to protect LGBT elders; and visitation policies and medical decision-making laws often exclude the families and partners of LGBT elders.

3.  LGBT elders are more likely to face social isolation. Despite a high level of resilience and strong friendship networks, social isolation has still been found to be higher among LGBT older adults. In addition to being more likely to live alone, LGBT elders also are more likely to feel unwelcome in, or be unwelcome in, mainstream aging programs such as senior centers and volunteer centers.

”This report outlines the issues and offers solutions, making it a much-needed roadmap for creating a society where all older adults are treated with dignity and respect,” said Michael Adams, Executive Director of SAGE.

“Most Americans already face challenges as they age, but LGBT older adults have the added burden of a lifetime of stigma; relationships that generally lack legal recognition; and unequal treatment under laws, programs and services designed to support and protect older Americans,” said Ineke Mushovic, Executive Director of MAP. ”Contrary to stereotypes, LGBT elders are more likely to live in poverty, face social and community isolation, and lack appropriate health care and long-term care.”

AdCare Health Systems, Inc. recently signed a definitive purchase agreement for a privately-held assisted living facility in Hoover, Alabama for $5.0 million.  The Ohio-based long-term care, home care and management company stated that the 105-unit facility is currently occupied at 59%.  The facility, located near Birmingham, was purchased from a bank.  AdCare expects to close the transaction in the next 45-60 days.

"This is the third facility we have agreed to acquire in the last few weeks, and one of several potential acquisitions in our pipeline," said Chris Brogdon, AdCare’s vice chairman and chief acquisitions officer. "We have secured financing to purchase this facility, and when occupancy improves under our more capable management, we expect this acquisition to be very profitable for AdCare."

"We plan to take further advantage of foreclosures and poorly run facilities, which we can purchase below market prices, and target acquisitions of both profitable and turnaround properties to grow our company," said Brogdon.

Home Care – Getting Help For Elderly Parents

April 19th, 2010 No comments

As we age, so do our parents. Some age better than others and it could be years before adult children need to seriously worry about how their parents are getting along alone at home. Home care is an option, and there are many types to choose from.

In many cases, supplemental insurance helps cover the costs of certain types of home care. If parents need any type of medical or nursing care either on a permanent basis or perhaps post surgery, insurance will usually cover a major portion of these expenses. Frequently a specific number of visits will be dictated by the insurance coverage.

Some parents are fairly mobile but things like simple housework or cooking meals is a problem for them. There are many home services that can provide daily or occasional help. Perhaps someone can come in on a Monday, prepare and freeze meals for an entire week, change linens, do some laundry, and maybe even do some errands that include grocery shopping and picking up prescriptions at a drug store.

For parents on medications, a home care Honolulu nurse can come to make certain medications are taken according to their doctor’s directions. Forgetting to take pills or taking the wrong ones at the wrong time can cause some serious problems even if it only happens once. Anyone with a serious health risk like cardiac problems or diabetes needs proper supervision as soon as there is any indication that medications are not being properly administered.

There are many alarms that can be purchased and they can be used for many reasons. An elderly parent who lives alone might benefit from a panic button that can be worn around the neck and which can be programmed to dial 911 or even a nearby family member. Of course, the parent needs to have the lucidity to be able to make these distinctions. The first time Mom calls 911 because she runs out of milk will force the family into serious discussions about additional home care on a more permanent basis.

Many neighbors are happy to provide whatever assistance they can as well, and they play an important part in planning home care for parents in all situations. They can do simple things like just checking in each morning, or they could help cook, clean, do errands, or just sit and have tea to keep them company. With smart phones, it’s easy to get immediate updates with emails and texts so no one needs to worry for hours about what’s happening.

Assisted Living facilities are becoming popular as well. Check out a few in the areas of your choice.

The Baby Boomers’ Daunting Task: How To Care For Their Aging Parents

April 19th, 2010 No comments

The numbers tell the story: By the year 2030, there will be over 72 million people over the age of 65 living in the United States. This group is being labeled the “Sandwich Generation” because they are sandwiched between their careers, caring for their kids as well as managing their elderly parents.

Starting the process of trying to line up help for an elderly parent is overwhelming task so many people understandably put it off. All you have to do is go to an online directory or open up the Yellow Pages under the categories of Nursing Home facilities or Home Health Care. Where do you even begin?

There are seemingly countless questions to ask. What are “assisted living” and “skilled nursing care”? How are they similar? How are they different? What is an “adult day care” facility? Of all the different care type choices, who qualifies for what? Which option is the best one for your situation? What do all these options cost? Does insurance cover any of it?

While it is beyond the scope of this article to delve into each type of care, some general advice follows.

1. By far the most important advice is to research your options sooner rather than later. Do not wait until a crisis occurs! If you wait until an emergency and don’t start your research until the day your dad is schedule for release from the hospital, there is no way you can make rational, informed decisions. And from my experience running a senior home care agency, I can tell you there is nothing more stressful (for both parties!) than a panicked call at the end of the day from someone who needs to set up 24 hour care starting the next morning. You’ll make things less stressful and make much better decisions if you start researching agencies and options before an emergency occurs.

2. Have a dedicated folder or notebook that you use to keep all your notes in as you research the various senior care options. There are some basic categories of care that you should become familiar with. They are Adult Day Care centers, Assisted Living Facilities, Non-Medical Home Care, Skilled Home Health Care and Skilled Nursing Facilities. Get a basic understanding of each of them and what types of situations each is best suited for. Once you have that understanding, then you can start looking into the various local options available.

3. By all means, use the Internet to help you with your research – it can be a wonderful timesaver. However, online research does not replace visiting a senior care facility. In my experience, what’s been particularly helpful is after the “official” guided tour, see if you can walk around for a little while and talk with those visiting their loved ones about the experience that they’ve had with the facility. Most will be more than willing to answer any questions you have. Doing this will be much more revealing than the formal tour. Plus, they probably did their research and visited other facilities so you can get some ideas of other options that may be available.

4. While you may not be ready to hire a caregiver for you mom yet, it’s a good idea to have a senior home care agency come to the home and do an initial assessment. This service is usually offered at no cost to you. This will give you the opportunity to evaluate various agencies and form a relationship with one or two that you like and trust. By doing this you can call on someone that you know (and is familiar with your situation) to call in case an emergency arises.

5. Find out whether your parents have a Long Term Care insurance policy and what it covers. And if they have a policy, make sure you know where it is.

Public Criminal Records Online

Today, there are several reasons one may want to run a Texas Criminal Records, or Criminal Arrest Records search on a variety of individuals. This can range from employment to dating and beyond. For, when one is going to hire someone, then one wants to find the most honest person one can find. In addition, if one has only recently met someone and needs to confirm the individual is acceptable as far as dating or potentially marrying, often one can perform a background check in order to assure oneself that there are no skeletons in the closet of the other party.

Although one can often begin a search for free, once a record matching the individual being searched upon has been located, most services charge a nominal fee to the consumer to obtain additional information related to the individual one may be looking for or researching. Still, these services are a lot less expensive than hiring one who works by the hour or taking time off oneself to research where the individual may be residing today.

In addition, employers can use this low cost service to run background checks on potential employees. Such checks have often saved employers millions of dollars by having avoided hiring someone who may have previous issues with either drugs or theft. Therefore, one need always be honest with regards to employment applications as more and more companies are performing these searches on a regular basis.

Today, these background search companies have become known far and wide. Also, while some may see these searches as a scam, most individuals can receive instant information when paying for such a service. Therefore, this service which locates and provides background checks on individuals through Texas Criminal Records, and Criminal Arrest records can save one a great deal of money over a Private Investigator who charges by the hour. Thus, once again saving the company a great deal of time and money.

Still, while most of these search services are run by respectable individuals, others are not. And, even with those that are respectable, there are some that are better than others. However, this company which offers this service, uses a variety of methods in which to find individuals. These include, but are not limited to, background checks, civil records, criminal records, people search and reverse searches can often help one find information more quickly than a service which is only using public records such as divorce records and utility bills.

To this end, if one needs to use such a search to find a long lost loved one, check out a potential employee or get a background check on a future life partner, then one may want to look towards a service which has access to the government registry. One can do so by typing background search government registry into any search engine and then reading through the displayed results to find the service which best fits the need. Of course, regardless of which service provider one may go to in such regard, having as much information as possible is always a good start when setting out on such a search.
