Gated Communities: Pros and Cons
One of the most important considerations is location when you make a house purchase. Where you choose to live such as a state, city or even a neighborhood does play a part. Whether you want to live in an open or gated community is another part entirely.
Gated communities have been around for years now in the United States. Over the past few years, however, it has become increasingly popular to live in one. In fact, it is something that is considered the epitome of success in American society in many instances. In many ways, it is a status symbol of how successful a family is. Like many aspects in the real estate field, though, there are positives and negatives that come along with it.
The upsides of gated communities are often bragged about by those who choose to live in them. Security is usually offered at all hours of the day in gated communities, for example. Reduced crime is consequently a big selling point for many gated communities. It consequently offers more of a sense of safety for families that have children. Access in and out of such communities is generally regulated, meaning gated communities can boast far less traffic than other residential neighborhoods in the vicinity. If you’re interested in purchasing a home in a gated community, then, research security, traffic levels, and crime statistics.
Elitist is an alternative way to describe gated communities by some, though. Some also see needing to go through third party guards in order to allow your guests access to your community as a large inconvenience. Guards and similar measures do, however, have their costs in a very literal sense, adding another downside to the list for people who are concerned about finances. It consequently costs quite a bit less to purchase a similarly-sized home nearby that is not in a gated community as a result. The added cost might not be worth it to some people.
Whether you choose a gated or an open community, then, largely depends on what you place the most value upon in your daily life. It is a personal decision with a financial impact that ultimately depends on what you are willing to sacrifice in cost to ensure a safer environment for you and your family.
