According to preliminary results of figures released on March 17, 2011 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people in the United States are living much longer than ever before. The CDC reported that the death rate for the U.S. population for 2009 was 741 deaths per 100,000, which represents a 2.3% decrease from the 2008 rate.

“This marks the tenth year in a row that U.S. deaths rates have declined,” the center said in a statement. From 2008 to 2009, oveall life expectancy rose from 78 years to 78.2 years. Death certificates from all 50 states were analyzed to get the data for the report.

Deaths were also down for a range of conditions, including a 3.7% drop in heart disease, a 4.2% drop in stroke, a 4.1% drop in Alzheimer’s disease, a 4.1% drop in diabetes, and a 1.1% drop in cancer. Better medical treatment, vaccinations, and measures against smoking are considered to be the driving forces in these trends, and the CDC plans to more closely review the reasons for the decline later this year when the final data is released.

No doubt about it, we will likely live longer lives than our parents and grandparents. Medicine has been improved due to the scientific advances made in recent years. Modern medicine can prevent or treat heart disease, diabetes, bacterial diseases and even cancer. Because of that, we’ll all live longer on average. While these conditions may no longer killing us in the percentages that were the norm years ago, we now will live longer, increasing the odds that we will suffer additional ailments in our later years.

With the baby boomers now coming fully into the retirement age, it becomes easy to understand why we are now developing options that will allow us to live a full and creative life in our golden years. The time is now, and communities, businesses, families and friends are all devising alternatives for seniors that did not exist in the past.

Look into the adult education classes that are available locally. Everything from financial management, photography to crafts is offered specifically for seniors. Look into classes offered by your local parks and recreations departments. Tai Chi, aerobics and even chair exercises are offered – there is something for every senior. These classes are geared for everyone from the very athletic senior to those with special needs. The classes offered meet the various needs of today’s seniors. And don’t forget to check out your local senior center. The opportunities for social and recreational activities are too numerous to mention.

Expanding the boundaries of your experiences and making new friends is an exciting part of your senior years. But, who will clean your home, do the yard work, do the grocery shopping and prepare the meals while you are taking advantage of all these opportunities? How will you manage if you are no longer able to drive or are impaired physically or mentally in any way?

Luckily, there are now a variety of senior living options available to you, depending on where you live. Most states and communities now have assisted living facilities available for seniors who want to enjoy their lives to the fullest. They offer a secure environment with all the basic needs provided. Assisted living facilities can often provide additional services with varying degrees of care, should you become ill or require additional help.

There are many assisted living facilities in Louisiana to choose from. Experts agree that it’s best to visit a number of facilities and ask lots of questions. You’ll undoubtedly know when you find the one that suits you best. It’s also a good idea to get some idea what the local assisted living costs are prior to touring the assisted living facility.

Many older people or those living with disabilities may not have a close relative or friend that can provide daily care for them when the time comes. This is sad but true. Others have those types of loved ones but they are unable to provide the care for different reasons such as lack of the proper facilities or budget. When this realization comes it can be extremely difficult for both parties. Fortunately, assisted living facilities may provide a solution to these problems. A place where people can receive care and still remain independent and social.

Being unable to conduct activities of daily life (ADLs) is a an issue that afflicts millions of people. This is usually most prominent in the elderly but may also include those with disabilities. These kinds of facilities can offer the supervision or assistance with all the ADL’s that a person may need help with. Activities such as eating, bathing, taking medication and dressing are the most prominent.

In most cases a person who resides in these establishment requires help in at least three ADLs. These are people who do not require the intensive amount of care that could be present in a nursing home and requires a more social environment to be comfortable.

By the numbers, most ALF residents are just under 87 years old and will stay in the facility for an average of 28.6 year until they are deceased. Women outnumber men in these residences by a three to one margin. Most residents are widowed while some may still have spouses and significant others still living.

One of the largest advantages is that of the social environment that these residences provide. Large common areas are available for eating with others and this helps to mitigate the loneliness many elders feel. This is a primary difference between ALFs and intensive care units where patients are kept bedridden and hooked up to monitoring devices most of or all the day.

Full meals, three times a day are prepared fresh each time by trained kitchen staff so that the residents need not worry about it themselves. The meals are served in the communal dining area where conversation and interactions can take place between the different groups of residents.

The newer ALFs provide their residents with an apartment style home that is all theirs. This allows the person to retain some dignity, independence, and privacy while not having to worry about most ADLs. Bedding is changed, trash is removed and meals are provided. There are no monitoring devices to keep people in their rooms in most cases and many can enjoy a normal life but with the help they require.

Mentally ill individuals such as those with dementia and Alzheimer’s may also take advantage of the services provided by Assisted Living New York facilities. Other types of people with mental needs may also qualify for residence in ALF’s as long as they do not pose a danger to themselves or others.

Florida assisted living and California assisted living facilities are each popular for family members who no longer can live independently. The range of prices and programs will make this an attractive option for seniors.

One of the hardest things you may ever have to do is to place your elderly parent into an assisted living center. As they age, they may no longer be able to take care of themselves, or have trouble keeping up with home maintenance. Although it is a hard decision to make, it can often be the most prudent choice for your parent and for you. Here are a few points to consider as you make the transition together.

1. Start with Medicare’s nursing home ratings website. This is a site administered by the government that has a great deal of information about these facilities, including quality of care and level of service. States vary in terms of their nursing home licensing requirements, so be sure to look into what your state mandates. As an example, New Jersey’s licensing requirements may be found at the state’s official website.

2. Take a look at the lifestyle of the residents at each facility. Does it seem to be a welcoming, inviting community? Is there a social director on site? Are outside activities offered, perhaps such field trips as bus rides to local events? The environment should be conducive to your loved one having the opportunity to meet neighbors and make new friends.

3. Ascertain the level of personal and health care services your parent may need. Are they able to take medications, bathe, and feed themselves, or do they need assistance? For those who are more mobile, are the other residents active too? Inquire about the availability of a social worker, and about the system they have for checking on the well-being of all the residents.

4. Proximity to family members is always beneficial. Even though most facilities are reputable and take good care of all residents, it is still suggested that family members have a presence there. This will remind the staff that someone else is watching to ensure that their loved ones are being treated well.

5. Finding a nursing home that will not break the bank is essential, especially these days. Determine how long a stay your parent will have at this facility. Is this going to be an interim measure for rehab purposes, or will they live there indefinitely? Many of the more costly nursing homes may offer more activities and lower staff to patient ratio, but finding a reasonably-priced facility with amenities is possible.

Even though you might feel that this is an emotionally-charged time for you and your loved one, don’t forget that the objective is to find them a place to live that ensures their comfort and safety. Since this is such a life-altering decision, gather all the information you can so that your parent will be able to settle into a new life as smoothly as possible.

Ruth Williams has written dozens of articles on education-related topics which include online colleges, financial aid, and online degree programs.

We all have older people in our lives that we love very much. In time, we will all be faced with aging and will, as some time need help ourselves. Finding good elderly care takes patience and research. Leaving someone who is fragile in the hands of strangers can be difficult so it is important that we do the homework necessary in finding the best assistance possible.

Sometimes the situation comes up with older people in our family that lets us know that they no longer can care for themselves. This can mean many things. It may mean that a new full time living situation needs to be found. Or it could mean that they need to be supervised and occupied during the day. Knowing what to do for a family member that is loved and cared for can be difficult, but if there are other family members that can be counted on, then drawing opinions and support from them at this time can be very helpful.

If you are curious about a day program, then there are a few options at your disposal. Adult day programs are available for older people who need a little assistance during the day, and it will keep them engaged and involved with other people while they are there. This is a great solution for those who do not need much assistance but do need help with medication and maybe meal time assistance.

If the concern is a full time living situation may be in order, than there are going to be many other decisions that will need to be made. This is the time to involve other family members and get their opinion and feelings on where and when to allow your loved one to be placed in a home or nursing facility.

When it is time to decide on what kind of help your loved one may need, talk to other close family members to see what their opinion is. Evaluate the situation and see what your loved on can do independently, such as toileting, bathing, eating, dressing, taking medications, things like that. If you determine that they are independent enough to handle of most of their own needs, then perhaps an adult day facility would be good for them. This keeps them occupied with activities and socialization with people their own age. Speak to your family about it and get their feedback, as well as the loved one being considered, if possible.

If it will be a living situation, then you may have to take a few tours of different facilities to decide where the best one is. Make sure that all your questions are written down because this is an important time to find out all their policies and regulations. Do research online and find out what others have said about their services. The family will want to be comfortable with the decision being made.

If it is possible, speaking to the one that will be making this transition would be a good idea. It is very important for them to be happy and if they can add some information that may make a difference, they should be heard. It is also important to keep clear communication open between all parties concerned.

Making a final decision about what to do or where to place a loved one who is in need of elderly care and assisted living Ohio services can be overwhelming. Just keep the communication open, and stay informed. Make sure you are on the same page as all the other people who have a stake in this decision.

Happen to be looking for assisted living New Jersey or assisted living California? Our directory provides up-to-date and comprehensive listings for seniors across North American.

The time comes when parents need more care than their kids can provide. While the decision to put their loved ones into assisted living is very hard, it can be made easier, if the right facility is found. This short guide can give the seeker peace of mind about what to look for in institutes for the elderly.

Before taking it upon yourself to decide that your loved one is ready, talk to their doctor or health care provider. This is a step that should not be skipped. If the decision is made, they will have a list of options already handy. This is especially true if the office is used to dealing with the elderly. This list is your stepping stone to the rest of the process. Take it home with you, and use it to your advantage.

Researching each company is your next move. It’s a good thing to know what other people are saying about it. Use the Internet to conduct your search. The search can begin by typing in the name of the company. The website should come up immediately, or be one of the first few links. Read the website in its entirety. There is an important reason for this step. There is no need to look into a facility if they are not noted for providing the services that your loved one will need. Many facilities, while operating similarly, have individualized programming for each resident.

Testimonials on the website are something else that can be of value. Most will talk about the facilities the company runs. They will discuss the staffing, and procedures of the place as well. These personalized accounts will touch the lives of those who are about to find themselves in a situation that they never would come.

Now it’s time to set up a walk through of each . This part of the search will add even more peace to the individual searching. They can see where their parent will be staying. They have the chance to meet some of the staff members, and get questions answered in person. This step is very important in the search.

Do this for several places before making any decisions. Each facility will be slightly different. They will offer varying degrees of programming. The goal is to find the place that best fits the needs of the family member in question. Take notes on the tour, and use them to later weigh out pros and cons.

Insurance coverage is the last detail consider. Many places take multiple insurances. Some do not. You will need to confirm that your charge’s insurance is accepted by the facility you are desiring to enter them into. Talk to the insurance company, and the admissions consultant there. Payment options are often accepted. This is viewed on a case by case basis, however, and should be thought about carefully, if the facility is a place you really want them to be living in.

The day that your loved one moves into the facility keep a few things in mind. They will be stressed out about the move. So will you. Take things with them that are familiar. Introduce them to the staff, and stay with them as long as they need. This will help ease the transition. These are just a few of the things to keep in mind when looking into a facility. Whether you live in California, or elsewhere, the steps will be the same.

Previewing assisted living facilities is easier done when the need is not imminent. Getting an early look at some communities may ease whatever stress may be involved in a move. A gradual transition from independent living to an assisted environment has many stages, spacing them can have positive benefits.

Many states require care facilities to be licensed. When visiting each community ask to see where the license is posted. Make sure that the date of the license is valid and the address reflects the location you are visiting. Regulations concerning the employees and the establishment should be available in a compliance report, ask for a copy.

Find out about institutional procedures. Knowing about the admission requirements will help you in filtering out the facilities where your parent cannot be qualified. Inquire about how a change to a resident’s medical needs affects their care, their living arrangements and their cost of living. If a person takes a vacation or has an extended stay in the hospital, ask if their living area is held open and for how long. Question if there are additional fees for transportation, haircuts, or personal items.

Notice the ratio of staff to resident, there should be adequate staff to provide whatever assistance is needed. Pay attention to the interaction between the workers and the residents. Conversations should be occurring and be warm and caring.

Pay attention to incidental care issues like how well the community is maintained. When walking through the buildings pay attention to the overall maintenance. Does anything look like it has been broken or in need of repair for a long time. Stroll around the grounds, are the trees and shrubs groomed and are the areas trash free. Observe the residents away from staff interaction. Note if residents are clothed properly for the current season, also look for person to person interactions. Specifically, how alert and interactive are the residents.

Personal independence is a major benefit in these care institutions. Many provide a sliding scale of assistance. As the resident gets older and needs more help they are moved to more advanced care areas. However, there are some broad areas that help a person feel as if they have control in their environment regardless of the amount of help needed. Socialization rights are important to know. Rules about visitation allowances and independent access to locations outside of the community should be understood.

The ability to control time and space is a large part of independence. Find out if residents are able to wake up when they desire and go to sleep when they want. Inquire about personalizing the living quarters. Some communities allow people to decorate their living space while others have the areas furnished. If your parent has a pet, find out if they are allowed to bring them to the community.

Try to visit a community around meal time. This way you can see the types of food the facility provides and if everyone has to eat the same thing or if a variety of food is available. Notice if any meals are delivered to the living quarters. Sit down and taste the food to see if it is tasty and fresh. Ask to see a menu schedule if there is one and find out if there is any time limit for meals.

These suggestions are by no means a complete assessment tool. But regardless of if you are in Arizona or Vermont, these ideas should be of help. Begin an online search to start locating assisted living facilities in your area.

An assisted living residence is a facility designed for senior citizens or persons with disabilities who need help with some activities of daily living (ADLs). These people may need assistance with things like managing their medications or taking a shower or bath, but they do not need the 24-hour care and supervision provided by a skilled nursing facility. In Texas, assisted living facilities (ALFs) are licensed as personal care facilities. By Texas law, facilities that provide services to 4 or fewer people do not need to be licensed; facilities that have a census larger than 4 do require a license.

The first ALFs opened in the 1980s, when the United States was dealing with an aging, but basically healthy, population who did not have family nearby to help meet the few care needs they did have. These people resisted going into nursing homes, which at the time offered only limited privacy and personal choice. ALFs usually provided people with private rooms or apartments; social activities and outings were available but not mandatory.

More than one million people in the United States currently call an assisted living residence home. Some of these people have cognitive impairments due to diseases such as Alzheimer’s, others are physically impaired but cognitively intact, and still others suffer from both kinds of impairments. Texas is home to 830 licensed and 4000 unlicensed personal care facilities.

An assisted living residence provides customers with a room and with three nutritious meals every day. In addition, the facility also provides staff to help with activities of daily living. Common needs include help managing one’s medications, performing personal hygiene tasks such as bathing, getting dressed, and going to the bathroom. Some residents may also need help with activities such as transferring from a wheelchair and eating.

ALFs charge a basic rate for room and board. In addition to that, they also charge for the assistance each person needs to function. The more help someone needs, the more he or she pays to remain in the facility.

For instance, in Austin, Texas, ALFs charge an average of $1500 per month for room and board alone. Once you figure in the services most people need, that cost goes up by about $500 per month. These costs are still less expensive than the costs of nursing homes which, in the Austin regions, charge an average of $3000 to $4000 each month.

Most people who live in an assisted living residence pay for their care from their own resources, although Medicaid is available to help cover the cost of care in about 41% of the states. Texas was one of the first two states to develop a Community-Based Alternatives program which helped pay for the cost of care in an assisted living facility. Around 22,000 Texans in ALFs currently receive assistance from the Texas Medicaid program.

Texas has also set standards to determine when an assisted living residence is no longer an appropriate placement for an individual. In order to remain in an ALF in Texas, patients must be able to understand emergency instructions and assist in their own evacuation in the event of a fire or other emergency. ALF care is also no longer appropriate if a resident needs 24-hour care and supervision or requires invasive procedures such as tube-feeding or IV medications.

Independent living centers are communities designed for senior citizens that provide services and resources necessary to make them self-sufficient. Independent living is also referred to as retirement communities or homes, and senior apartments or housing. These facilities differ from assisted living communities in that the personal needs of the senior citizens such as bathing, dressing, eating etc. have to be managed by the senior citizens on their own. Also, the medical facilities that are available are limited, and outside services have to be contacted in case additional assistance is required.

The services and resources that are generally provided at independent living communities include easy transportation, social activities like golfing, group meals, laundry and cleaning services, housekeeping services, exercise facilities such as in-house gyms and saunas, libraries, and the like. The main aim of these communities is to provide senior citizens with the environment in which they can interact with their peers and enjoy access to basic social, cultural and fitness services.

A senior person needs to fulfill particular criteria, before he/she can opt for independent living. These centers usually admit those in the age group of 55 to 58+ or those who have reached their post retirement age. This facility is specially open to those senior citizens who are healthy, mobile and self sufficient to a large extent. These centers generally have those residents, who like to remain in small homes and are self dependent on monetary issues. Like the name of these centers suggest, the residents are meant to manage their medical treatment and caretakers on their own.

You must ascertain the services that you want to have before checking into an independent living community. Some of the services commonly requested by residents are: proximity of the facilities like grocery or medical clinics, transportation and parking facility, security features like guards or railings around the housing quarters.

The types of options available for independent living include apartments, retirement communities and low income housing. These housing areas can either be leased or bought by residents. The services and shared facilities they offer vary according to the area and price.

A skilled nursing facility is available for retirement communities and senior citizens, who are unable to take care of themselves due to old age, injury or disability. Chronic medical conditions often make fit and working people, also require help in carrying out simple day to day activities.

The condition of each patient is different, and in each case, personalized attention and treatment needs to be given. In order to qualify for care in a skilled nursing facility, the patient must require more attention than what is usually provided at home. In some cases, a patient is directly transferred from the hospital to a skilled nursing facility or an assisted living center as recommended by the physician, so that they can recover from their injuries as soon as possible. The medical coverage for this kind of service depends on the type of insurance the patient has, and the duration of the illness.

A skilled nursing facility has repertoire of services like: medical care by a Registered Nurse (RN), or personal care which may or may not be accompanied by medical care. Skilled facility and continuous medical care is provided to the patients recovering from major accident, infection, illness or more serious conditions like stroke or paralysis, this facility may last for duration of a few weeks or months.

Medical personnel in a skilled nursing facility can provide the following services: wound dressing in case of injury, monitoring and administering antibiotics, and speech and physical therapy. These services are generally provided in the short term, till such time the patient gets stronger and healthier. Other personal care services in these facilities include bathing and eating assistance, getting in and out of bed, toileting, and walking.

A skilled nursing facility is better equipped to provide medical care unlike other nursing homes, which lack medical facilities for emergencies. These nursing facilities provide assistance living facilities with daily activities, and also allow more independent living than nursing homes. You can opt for short term or long term assisted living services, depending upon the condition of the patient or the time he/she is likely to take in getting well again. Being less expensive than a nursing home makes this facility more preferable by people approaching their retirement age.

Most people search the internet to look for skilled nursing facilities or assisted living centers. You should check the facilities and qualifications of the staff to choose a center that would address your requirements.

Generally, residents of a assisted living center comprise older age group, or those regaining their health after illnesses like stroke, paralysis, inability to move. Before deciding to move into an independent living or home care facility, one can always live temporarily to check out the services offered and choose the place for long term basis.

Besides helping citizens go about their daily tasks, these centers also provide other services such as local transportation. It also gives the residents a chance to socialize and meet people of their own age groups and perform other social activities. The facilities not provided include medical and dental care, both of which have to be arranged by the residents from other external services.

The cost of living in assisted living centers is less than that charged by full time nursing homes. Some of the long term care may be covered by health insurance, but the cost of living in these centers is not generally covered by Medicare, and has to be arranged by the residents or their families.

Every assisted living center offers different styles of retirement living, where some may offer private residential home, others may offer apartment complexes with hundreds living together. All services asked by the residents are arranged and met within the premises. Although 24-hour nursing facility is not provided, daily chores are performed on a routine basis, and meals are prepared and provided several times daily.

The staff is trained and made to check on all residents periodically. These complexes also have in-house grocery stores and beauty parlors, while some may even have medical help available on call. Common areas for socializing and eating are open and available to residents.
