Shower Curtains In Fabric

February 23rd, 2011 No comments

So, one day, fabric shower curtains went the way of the dodo and glass shower doors became fashionable. But, like most fads, common sense resurfaced and the fashions that once were, have come back as they do. You’ll now find that fabric shower curtains are all the rage once again and are easily available from most stylish home decor stores.

However, don’t throw out your old glass doors just yet. The convenience and smart look of the glass doors seem to be firmly entrenched with some people. Adherents of glass doors will swear by these and will even sometimes be ready to lay down their reputations for them.

You’ll find, when discussing fabric shower curtains, that their owners are laid back and will smile when asked about their preferences. Naturally, they’ll defend their fabric shower curtains but they also admit to seeing the advantages of glass shower doors as well. No dripping from the bottom of the curtain, no constantly damp curtain folds that need to be separated out each morning in order to prevent mildew.

Most convenient of all, is the easy cleaning granted by glass shower doors. However, as the fans of fabric shower curtains will also tell you, glass doors have their downsides too, the biggest of which being that if you permit the cleaning of the doors to go for even one week, stains will begin to form along the sides where they’re fixed to the wall and some of these seem to have a much stronger will than you do.

And if you don’t give the glass shower doors a regular wipe-down, your otherwise nice clean bathroom will start to look rather grubby. The reason though why fabric shower curtains are an all time favourite of many people in the know, is for only one reason and one reason only. This is also what leads these people to have a smug smile on their faces even after they’ve just spent the last half hour cleaning their bathroom. Fabric shower curtains are disposable and so can be changed quickly.

Yes, that’s the one whopping big reason why fabric shower curtains are still a firm favourite with a lot of people. Have you ever tried replacing your glass doors on a regular basis? It just won’t happen and its doubtful if it will ever happen for a few years, unless that is you take a hammer to it.

So, now you know the reason for that mysterious smile and why fabric shower curtains never really went out of style. Convenience, more convenience and still more convenience. So if you’re considering of changing from your glass shower doors to the more convenient, disposable fabric shower curtains don’t be put off.

Once you remove those doors, your life is bound to become easier, and if it’s not, just change one set of fabric shower curtains for new ones. If nothing else it’ll make you feel a bit better!

Wintertime Home Decorating

December 26th, 2010 No comments

Most people begin the home decorating process for winter with a bang only to end with a whimper. Far too few people realize that Christmas is only the beginning of the winter season and that while Christmas decorations are a nice addition, they are also a temporary decorative addition in most homes lasting little more than a month if that long. This leaves two more months of winter with a sparsely decorated home in many cases.

There are many things that are associated with winter however far too many of these things have been swept under the category of Christmas decor and their values as simple hallmarks of winter have been forgotten or relegated to the mere distinction of yet another Christmas decoration. Winter months for some are long and cold. Anything that brings a feeling of warmth and cheer into the home is for the most part an excellent idea as a winter home decoration.

Believe it or not, hibernating animals for many brings about a feeling of winter. Try using black bears as a home decorating theme to make your home feel a little more cozy and better prepared for the cold nights of wintertime. Flannel is a great companion to these delightful black bears and can be used in throws, bedding, and curtains in order to complete the look with style and finesse. In fact, you might want to throw in a few flannel pillows so that you can attempt to hibernate right alongside the cuddly black bears. These are quite popular home decorations as of late so you should have no problem finding a bear or two unless you happen to be in my neighborhood because I’ve probably snapped them all up already.

Fireplaces. There isn’t enough that can be said about the ability of a nice roaring fire to add warmth and a wintertime glow to almost any room. It really isn’t winter for most people unless there is a nice fire burning in the grate. The warmth is so much more than merely physical it is also soul soothing and comforting to watch a fire burning brightly before your eyes while warming your cold hands and feet. These nifty devices can also add a touch of romance to your winter nights so be sure to keep cozy blankets and candles close by as well.

Speaking of candles. Much like a fireplace candles add a warm cheerfulness to the rooms they touch. There are certain fragrances that are perfect for wintertime candle burning but even less appropriate fragrances are often welcome during winter months as they provide the soft glow that makes the world seem so much smaller and friendlier in the process. Keep this in mind as you are shopping for your winter home decorating ideas as well as the fact that fragrances matter when creating an atmosphere so choose the fragrances appropriately to the season.

Use pillows and blankets in your winter decorating to add layers of warmth and comfort as well as visual appeal. It is amazing the things that the mind can do in the winter but one of the more amazing things it does is convince you that you are warm when you are surrounded by warmth. With blankets and pillows lining your sofas and chairs however, if your mind doesn’t convince you there is always the option of just bundling up and letting your body convince your mind. There is also something soothing about the comfort and close softness of the pillows and blankets whether one is in perfect health or really feeling the chill of winter down to their bones.

Don’t let the celebration of winter end when the Christmas tree comes down. Find ways to incorporate warmth into your home decorating style that only winter can accommodate. Embrace the season with affection and laughter and all that enter your home will be warmed by the charming atmosphere inside.

Country Home Decorating

December 23rd, 2010 No comments

When choosing a theme or style for decorating your home, there are many to choose from. One of the most popular decorating themes today is country home decorating. Perhaps it is the most popular because it provides an inviting atmosphere and overall friendly feeling. Country home decorating, because of its warm environment, is enjoyed by the people who live there as well as all those who visit.

As with any home decorating project, a homeowner must first decide where they want to use country home decorating. Some people choose to use this theme throughout their entire home while other decide to use country home decorating focusing on just one or two rooms, for example the kitchen and the living room. Because this style is meant for people who enjoy simplicity and the nature, some homeowners may decide to carry the country decorating theme through the entire living space.

Country home decorating combines colors which are clean and bright with country furniture and accessories. When choosing colors for country home decorating, light to medium shades of white, yellow, pink, green or brown are good choices. Colors should reflect a rustic feeling. To add to the painted walls, a homeowner or decorator may decide to use stencils with country character such as flowers or plants, fruits or vegetables. Wallpaper boarders are also often used in country home decorating. It is fine to use these additions but the rule of thumb is – to make sure the patterns do not clash.

In keeping with a rustic and simple theme, country home decorating uses wood – natural wood. When deciding on a material for a country floor, natural wood is a nice choice. Of course using natural wood throughout a large area can be costly. If looking for a less-expensive way to give floors a country look, a light shade of carpet might be considered or laminate flooring. These options would also work well with the country home decorating theme. Other suggestions for country floors are flagstone or tile. Some homeowners, if they’re really creative, decorate their floors with stencils and create patterns. Another great way to jazz up a space is to use area rugs. In keeping with the country home decorating theme, those with an authentic look create a warm and cozy feeling. Hooked, quilted and braided rugs make beautiful additions to a country floor.

When choosing furniture to compliment country home decorating, light wood or wicker is suggested. Again, these materials reflect the beauty of nature. If a homeowner or decorator decides fabric would accent their furniture, such as cushions or slip covers, floral patterns or checkered fabrics add to the authentic look.

Accessorizing a space always adds to its beauty. When buying accessories to fit in with a country home decorating theme, it is good to keep in mind the type of atmosphere you are trying to create, a warm and inviting space. Simplicity goes a long way in country home decorating. It is recommended to never use too many decorations and choose accessories that family and friends will enjoy. Photos in simple wooden frames, plain mirrors, plants and scented candles dress up country home decorating. Window treatments should also be simple. Lace or shutters give a cozy country feel. Country home decorating can be interesting and fun. Perhaps the main detail to keep in mind is simplicity. Try not to over-decorate, remember too many patterns will clash. Too many decorations will eliminate the amount of space in a room. Country home decorating creates a relaxing and friendly environment, meant to be warm and cozy.

Office Decor

December 11th, 2010 No comments

It’s been at least a year now since you moved to your new work place and officially took over your new office. At first, you were busy coping with a new home and learning a new job, but now that you’re settled in you start noticing the same things that you noticed when you first arrived.

The walls are a bland, drab colour and are looking decidedly depressing. The sun streaming in through the industry-quality blinds is barely enough to light a cupboard and the furniture is just about as plain and worn as it can get. You figure that a decent amount of time has passed for you to start planning the redecoration of your office.

Naturally, before you commence it’s always a good idea to make certain that those in charge don’t have a problem with your stylish redecorating plans. And remember that it is only an office and so you should treat your plans to redecorate as such.

Painting the walls a bright red colour probably won’t work. However, you could brighten things up a bit by repainting the walls a bright and jolly colour that won’t upset anyone, least of all you. Then you could always remove those ancient blinds that have been hanging there since the early 1980′s and replace them with something more pleasing and functional.

On the other hand, if the whole of the office is decorated in the same style with the same blinds hanging on each window, your a la mode changes might not be appreciated by your colleagues. So, think twice before making drastic changes that alter the whole style and atmosphere of the entire office.

There are, however, simpler ways you can carry out your office decorating project without too much hassle on your part and which doesn’t necessarily need to be thought over too much. You could brighten up any room by placing a couple of flowering plants here and there around your office.

However, if you’re like me and you don’t have green fingers or if you enforce suicide on any plants near you, then maybe you shouldn’t bother with plants. You could however bring in some bright pictures and hang them up on your walls. Or perhaps you have children and they have painted some smashing pictures for you.

Kids’ paintings work well and will show your co-workers a different side of your character. But, don’t get stressed out over anything though – you really don’t need a simple decorating job to add to the rest of your worries – an office decorating project should be fun and stress-free.

Remember, your office decorating project need not entail your turning the whole office, or yourself, on its head. It should be something that you can live with on a daily basis.

After all, you’re at your office most of the day, so it should be a place where you can feel just as relaxed as you are in your own home.

Interior Design Ideas

December 10th, 2010 No comments

Redecorating your house really isn’t that simple and it only gets even less so when you are stumped for ideas. The only real way to get over this lack of interior design ideas, is to sit down, put your feet up and have some tea or coffee.

I’m not joking, there’s really no substitute for getting a new perspective on things, like taking a break from everything for example. In the first place, you become more relaxed, and in the second place a steaming cup of tea or coffee is always welcome.

Once that you’re sitting down comfortably and are suitably relaxed, shut your eyes and picture the room that you want to redecorate. Even if you are redecorate more than one room, it’s always a good idea to start with one room first, working your way logically through to the next one and then the next one.

Also, before you start on your journey through the maze of interior design ideas, keep a notebook and pen at hand so that you can write down any inspirational ideas you have before you forget them.

So, just sit back and picture the room in your mind. Try and see it as you want it to look. And if that’s too difficult, then first try to replace separate bits and pieces. This is always a good way to start. If you’ve still got a mental drought on interior design ideas, then leaf through some interior design catalogues beforehand so that you have at least a working idea of what you can do to redecorate the room.

The interior design catalogues don’t need to be anything more expensive than your free local department store catalogue, turned to the home furnishing section. Then again, nowadays you also get specialist shops which cater solely to the art of redecorating your home. If you have the time, a quick trip down to one of these might also help to end the dearth on interior design ideas, and will probably help to get you kick started.

These stores will have decorated sets of several designs, giving you a good impression of what your room could look like if you buy those materials. However, if you’re going to one of those shops, expect to spend some cash as no matter how hard you try to keep a tight hand on your pocket, you’ll always find something you want to buy.

This is not always a bad thing, but unless you watch out you could end up buying things you don’t really need and without a proper idea of what you want the room to look like, it can prove to be disastrous. Don’t worry though, if you keep your goal in mind, you can go back home and make a start on redecorating your rooms the way you want to.

And now that you’ve managed to get at least some interior design ideas of what your rooms should look like, your whole redecorating project should be that much easier and that much more fun.

What Are Country Decorating Ideas?

December 8th, 2010 No comments

For us who live in the country decorating ideas are not hard to come by. Personally speaking, I think that a great deal of my inspiration comes from the world around me. When I say that, I don’t mean to imply that I use the most obvious aspects of the country around me, only that if you look hard enough you’ll always find a subtle blend of country decorating ideas that you will be able to take into your own stylish home decor.

Decorating your home with country decorating ideas is all very well and good but if you don’t make it blend in naturally with its environment your house will stick out like a sore thumb like an invader upon the glory of nature. Haven’t you ever looked at a house set in the country and thought to yourself: how beautiful and serene it was, and how much you’d really like to live there?

Haven’t you ever asked yourself why this should be so? Undoubtedly, it was for the house’s simplicity and elegance, together with the fact that it melded in so well with its environment. If you live in the country, you’re probably unaware of what I’m talking about and you are wondering why I mention it.

Maybe you’ve lived in the country all of your life and you really don’t see what is that wonderful about the old country decorating ideas and homes that blend in with the environment. After all, a country house is just like any other house that you can find anywhere else. Or so you might think.

Well, you’d be wrong on that count! Country houses are a pure joy for the person who has been living in a concrete jungle. So, if you’re fortunate enough to live in the country enjoy the fact.

With a home in the country decorating ideas should be coming into your head nineteen to the dozen and with only a little forethought on your part, you can make your normal country house into a cozy country retreat.

The only negative aspect I’ve found with this so far is the number of ideas I get from my surroundings. That might not sound like a drawback, but trust me, there’s nothing worse than having country decorating ideas pouring out of your fertile mind with almost no pause and not being able to implement them all.

However, when this begins to happen I just sit back and let it take over me. I’ve found that there’s no use fighting the inevitable, and a little dreaming never hurt anyone. If the ideas I’ve had are really amazing and grab my attention I take down painstaking notes about what I’d like to do.

So, the you have it, no matter whether the idea is to change your home into a country retreat, or whether you just want to redecorate the house you already have with country decorating ideas, the inspiration should be easy to come across and just as easy to put into practice. A country home is the right place to be to implement your country decorating ideas and relax from your fast working life.

Interior Painting Ideas

December 6th, 2010 1 comment

Redecorating or renovating your home is never easy, and it gets much harder and more tedious when you need to paint as well. Sloshing on one coat of paint after another can be draining if you’re doing it alone and still have the whole house to consider.

And let’s not even start talking about the ceilings! But even if you do stick to the same old staid exterior paint job, it doesn’t need to be the same for the interior – you could always try some wild and wonderful interior painting ideas. If nothing else you’ll be guaranteed a reaction from all who enter your house.

By reducing the exterior painting plans to the necessary minimum, you can spend more time and creativity to the interior. You can let your imagination run riot with all those interior painting ideas you always wanted to implement but never got around to. And, as they say, there’s no time like the present, and really, when are you going to get round to redecorating your house again?

However, don’t get alarmed. When I’m talking about flamboyant interior painting ideas, I’m not saying that you should go with something that resembles a modern art painting. I’m talking about something more along the lines of a paint job that will reflect who you are.

So your interior painting ideas need not be anything bolder than a streak of vibrant colour on one wall, surrounded by soothing colours on the other walls. This works very well in any house and the vibrant colour that you pick out can be either soothing or primal, depending on what you want to reveal of yourself. You could, of course, always go to extremes and emulsion all the walls a bright vibrant shade or even mix and match different shades on different walls.

If you’re doing this then you might want to think about the effect you’ll have and whether you can actually live with the colour scheme. Wild and inspired interior painting ideas are all well and good, but you should always take into account whether you’re going to be able to stand the sight of your newly panted walls or not next month. If you are going to have to repaint everything again, it kind of defeats the purpose.

This doesn’t mean that you should restrict your creative urges or stifle your interior painting ideas. All it means is that some of your bolder ideas, should perhaps be the subject of a small test-run somewhere else.

Don’t think of painting your house as a chore. If you really want to, you can always think of yourself as Michelangelo or Da Vinci or any one of those great artists and paint a stunning picture on your walls. The only requirement is that you turn your great interior painting ideas into reality and that you have fun while you’re doing it.

Stylish Home Decorating in Black and White

December 6th, 2010 No comments

When people begin thinking about living room decorating ideas and decorating their residence, whether it be one or two rooms or even the complete house, the first question that usually comes to mind is ‘what colour’. Generally, people choose colours that they like or those which match pieces of their existing furniture. When searching for living room decorating ideas, one idea which is perhaps too often overlooked is decorating with the two basic colours (or shades, to be accurate) ” black and white.

Black and white, used in home decor shows style and creates drama and pizzazz. Top interior designers say that every room in the house can benefit from using a touch of black. Black is a colour which anchors and grounds a room. Adding sophistication, black is definitely a colour that demands attention. Stylish home decor ideas for a home using black may include accessories such as light fixtures, trim or furniture. Black serves to add definition to focal points in a room. Black is just one colour that stands out or makes a statement, but it is definitely one of the most outspoken!

Decorating with the shades of black and white in your living room decorating ideas, provides a clean, fresh, elegant atmosphere. This combination can be used in any room in a home making it a sophisticated space. Black and white are frequently used in contemporary interior design and frequently used to highlight other colours in the French Country style. It may be hard to conceptualize but there are many ideas for decorating a home using combinations of only these two basic colours.

The floor is a great place to start when you’re having living room decorating ideas. Black and white vinyl tiles laid alternately make a beautiful chessboard pattern and gives a clean and elegant appearance. Black marble used on the floor, accented by wide white baseboards is another beautiful idea for decorating a home. Laying white ceramic tiles with a black border or simply painting the floor black or white and using pattern stencils of the opposite colour for decoration is also really stunning. These all are great ideas for re-vamping a home.

Is there anything more perfect than white walls? Painting the walls white or even an off-white would make a perfect background for accessories such as paintings framed in black. Imagine that – stylish home decor! Elegant black window treatments or black shutters against a clean, crisp white wall would definitely create an air of sophistication. Perhaps a glass-topped table with black iron rim and black chairs? These are great ideas for decorating a home using only black and white.

Just imagine a bedroom decorated using only black and white – that would be quite beautiful stylish home decor too. A black or white iron bed-frame with a striped black and white blanket or eiderdown on top. The pillow cases could be either all black or all white too and you could add throw cushions or / and a bolster in the opposite colour.

A nice leather black or white armchair or sofa in the corner would definitely accent the living room decorating ideas. Then you could have the white walls with a sophisticated piece of artwork, framed in black, hanging on it. That would surely add to the modern feel of your living room decorating ideas. Black furniture against the stark white walls would definitely look really neat and tidy and you could jazz it all up with accessories like pewter or silver candlesticks, jugs or vases.

However, if you think that the living room decorating ideas need a bit more colour to complete the effect, perhaps a throw or a cushion in a bold colour such as red or gold on the chair in the corner of the room would be enough to highlight the room. There are innumerable ways to decorate a home, however, discovering the one that suits you and those who live with you is really very important. It’s nice to do something extreme and unusual, but please remember that you must be able to live with what you have created for quite a while.

Kitchen Decorating Ideas

December 1st, 2010 No comments

It’s a Saturday morning and you’re sitting there waiting for your coffee machine to finish its various gurgles and noises so you can have that all important early morning cup of coffee. Idly, you look around your kitchen and notice a fleck of paint on the corner of the door. It had been there for years but you never really took any notice of it until now.

Your gaze continues to wander and your eye gets caught by a patch of mildew growing just under the sink, then you notice the ugly brown colour that your ceiling has turned just above where the cooker stands.

The paint is faintly off colour, and the only papered wall is beginning to look old-fashioned and grubby. You take a strengthening sip of your now-ready coffee and decide that a little bit of kitchen decorating is called for.

How do you go about it though? And how soon can you get started? Now that you’ve finally noticed all the signs of decay that you had been quite successfully ignoring up until that moment, you can’t wait to begin your little kitchen decorating project.

That however is where the crunch comes. Just how modest do you want to keep your kitchen decorating project? Can you get away with sloshing a fresh coat of paint on everything or will you need to go to the trouble of removing the wallpaper off the wall, and finding out where that mildew stain might be headed.

Sure enough, it all depends on you and your budget, but if you can spare the time, energy and money, you’ll probably do better, in the long run. to get rid of all your kitchen decorating problems at once. That would include stripping the wallpaper, replacing any carpeting or rugs that you might have, and perhaps even sanding down your wooden floors if you have those. If you’re going to do a complete job of kitchen decorating however then you’ll also need that all important final coat of fresh paint to brighten up your kitchen.

You might also want to think about replacing those old lace curtains as they’re also probably looking distinctly old by now. So, go on and splash out on your kitchen decorating project and replace the curtains and while you’re about it, you might want to think of investing in a new stack of tea towels as well. It doesn’t hurt to go all out when you can.

And when you’re finally done, you can sit back and enjoy your new kitchen and remember that weekend morning that started it all off. You’ll have no regrets whatsoever, since your kitchen decorating project has landed you with a better kitchen than you ever hoped for.

A feeling of content engulfs you as you lift your new coffee mug to your lips. Life just doesn’t get any better than when you’re enjoying the fruits of your effort.

Teen Rooms Decor

December 1st, 2010 No comments

Teen rooms are a headache for mothers everywhere. It’s not even like when they were pre-teens. In those days, if their rooms were untidy, you could shout at them and get them to clean it up, and, barring that, you could go in and do it. However, when it comes to teens and their rooms you’re dealing with something whole different entirely.

True, you could go and tell them to tidy up their rooms. And true, you could shout at them a little, if you wanted to, or go and clean the room yourself. However, that’s when all the trouble starts. Teen rooms are private places and not to be entered into unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Woe betide the person who dares to move even one inch of that mess on the carpet. It was there for a good reason and you had absolutely no right to move it. At least, that will be the argument of most teens, and you being the patient, caring mother that you are, will just roll your eyes and tell them that the whole pizza and day-old shirt thing just don’t go well together and you were just rescuing them from the anger of the stalking pizza slice.

Your teens will in turn roll their eyes and scream, not to exaggerate, it wasn’t about to grow legs and walk off on its own, and if it was then wouldn’t that make a great science project. So, you keep cleaning and they keep putting things back. And so ends the story, and you’re right back to square one.

Of course, one way that you could deal with this catastrophe is to redecorate it. Teen rooms might be sanctities to them, but even they would like it if you gave their rooms a fantastic makeover.

That doesn’t mean that the room will be any tidier after they have moved back in, but at least you’ll have been able to seen the inside of the room long enough to tide you over for the next few years. That is unless you’re thinking of redoing their rooms every year.

But now you come to your next problem, since teens are notoriously different with regard to their rooms. You might find that your teen rooms are decorated quite differently from that which you had anticipated and that which you would have done beforehand. This is where a comprise ought to be struck, if your teen demands black walls in his room, then say you want to use another colour too that will offset the black.

Be prepared to give in a lot on your ideas no matter how silly their ideas seem to you. After all, they’re only a teen for a while and later on they will look back with horror on what bad taste they had had.

As a parent it is your duty to give them these moments in their lives which they can look back on with due horror, and ban their kids from doing the same to their own teen rooms.
