Garden Deck Or Patio Layout

February 24th, 2011 No comments

After you have finished buying in your garden patio furniture and you have set it out as you like, it is time to park yourself in one of your new patio chairs with one of your favourite drinks and maybe a pen and paper, and take stock of the state of affairs.

Is your garden patio a little congested or do you have loads of room? Are there other things you would like to have out there? How about plants? Do you have enough plants and bushes – eye candy? Will you be using it only in the daytime or in the evening or even at night too? Will you need lighting, for example?

This is where your own personal stylishness can be added to your shop bought furniture to make the patio truly your patio. So, if you live in a house that only has a small garden, you might want to think about things that hang rather than things that must be sited on the ground, which will take up walking space.

If you do not have much space, but you want to grow plants with edible fruit such as strawberries or tomatoes, you could get some hanging baskets. You can hang them from bushes or standard lamps or fix them to a boring wall. In the same way, you could grow herbs or other small flowers in a window box which has been fixed to a wall or placed on top of it. Or put shelving up and put boxes and pots on that.

If your patio is too sunny, you could grow sunflowers or put up a trellis or an arbour and grow vines or clematis up it. Bamboo grows fast too. If it is too shaded, plant lots of bright yellow and white flowers and maybe paint the walls white or pink, if you are not keen on glare.

If your garden patio is a much larger, you could add garden accessories in order to further your enjoyment. For instance, you could construct a barbecue area out of stone slabs or bricks. You could add a fountain too. A fountain makes the very soothing sound of running and splashing water and fish are a delight to watch.

For the colder months, you could build a fireplace, if local bylaws permit or get a patio heater. They are very efficient and can keep a fair radius warm, depending on the ambient temperature.

You will probably need some form of lighting as well, if you plan on spending some evenings on your patio. I suggest a few spotlights to highlight your favourite plants and the fountain and a broader beam light that you can read by. Do not put these lights near where you mean to sit because they will be a magnet for flying insects. However, they make a good distraction from you and will keep all but the blood sucking insects away.

For parasites such as mosquitoes, you should get some form of mosquito trap. Some are very good and promise to keep a quarter or even half an acre clear of mosquitoes and other such nuisances.

For all these extra accessories you will need power points. Therefore, if you plan your garden with pen and paper like I mentioned at the beginning of this article, then you will be able to show the electrician where you want the points and what-not in your new garden patio layout.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with commercial patio heaters. If you are interested in patio heaters too, please click through to Residential Patio Heaters.

Costume Design

February 19th, 2011 No comments

People all over the world like watching films and films often reflect local traditional stories and folklore. The fascination with ghosts, ghouls and witches is a global phenomenon, but there are more local ones too.

One of the most famous in Europe is the so-called vampire, Vlad the Impaler, who really did exist but probably not in the form of the vampire that we all know of today from books and films.

Then there are the witches and warlocks who have been both respected and feared throughout history. Think of Merlin the Magician from the court of King Arthur and the witches of Salem in the United States, who were persecuted and murdered along with thousands of others in Europe at that same time.

There are also tree nymphs or dryads, believed in by the ancient druids and many peoples in other continents too such as Asia and Africa. Fairies and goblins are or at least were widely feared all over the world and there were the little people in Ireland, the Leprechauns. However, these characters did not only live on land. The ancient Greeks believed in Poseidon the god of the sea and many sailors believed in mermaids.

Some would argue that angels, cherubim, seraphim and the like come into the same group. Some would even say that Satan and God do too. All of the above characters, with the possible exception of God, have been represented by human beings at parties that we call fancy dress parties many, many times.

Many films have been made which include some of the above characters. The most famous of these in recent years being the Harry Potter series and the Lord of the Rings. Just imagine the work that must have gone into making the costumes for those films.

What if you could create your own costume on that plane of excellence for your next fancy dress party? Well, the costume designers working on those films are professionals, of course, and they have large budgets and ample of resources to work with. You will be much more restricted, but you can still realize very decent results.

The first thing to do is select the character that you want to dress up as. Let’s say a vampire. Then you ought to do a bit of research to find out what the character looked like. This is very simple on the Internet or you may have films and books on the topic. Then you make a list of the things you will need in order to dress yourself the same and perhaps the make-up you will require too.

So, for a vampire, you will need long black trousers or a long black dress; a black jacket, shirt or blouse; black shoes and a black cape (or blanket). Some white make-up or talcum powder will give you a ghouls complexion and some red or dark-red lipstick will emphasize your deathly pale complexion. A set of long white or yellowish fangs finishes the image. Then all you need to do is practice a few hypnotic stares in the mirror and a couple of weird stares and you are ready.

If you find it difficult to get hold of any piece of the fancy dress, you could either rent a costume locally or purchase one from the Internet.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a variety of topics, but is now concerned with costumes for kids parties. If you would like to know more, please visit our website at Costumes For Kids Parties.

Halo 3: Bring It On!

February 16th, 2011 No comments

Recently while looking through the Internet for details on the Halo 3 weapons cheats, I came across a number of what-if scenarios? What if Master Chief took on different famous characters from movies, comic books, and legends? Here is a list of some of these battles and my take on the outcome.

While technically not a Halo 3 weapon cheat, the contest between Master Chief versus Robocop could be interesting. According to the information on the Internet both have several similarities. They’re both human, they’ve both been improved on, they both have fantastic armour and they are both veteran combatants. Most voters thought that Master Chief would defeat Robocop, but let’s face facts here, Master Chief can be defeated with a hand-gun, whereas Robocop kept on going after being blown up at a petrol station. The verdict has to go to Robocop.

If Master Chief took on the next combatant he would need to have a Halo 3 weapon cheat. I’m talking about MacGyver. Master Chief has a lot going for him. He is proficient with a variety of weapons; he has that amazing armour; he has some incredible vehicles at his disposal; he’s a Clint-Eastwood-type loner and he can regenerate himself. However, in short, MacGyver has brains. It would probably boil down to the same thing in a fight between Batman and Superman. However, if it’s a closed arena where it’s man against man, Master Chief is going to win. But put this contest in the real world with Swiss army knives and plastic tape at his disposal, and MacGyver’s going to wipe the floor with our futuristic friend.

Up until now Master Chief is 2-0 down, and it’s starting to seem like he can definitely use a Halo 3 weapon cheat or two. But we’ll give him another opponent. This time it’s going to be Master Chief versus the Terminator. We already know Master Chief’s powers, the Terminator’s consist of an ability to master any weapon, relentless willpower, indefatigability, amazing detrermination to kill his prey. It all boils down to the Spartan laser weapon. As one voter said, if Master Chief can destroy vehicles with this weapon he can certainly blast a sizeable hole in the Terminator too.

OK, let’s have another battle before Master Chief discovers his Halo 3 weapon cheat. What can he do in battle against Boba Fett from Star Wars? The main differences between Master Chief and Boba Fett are that Boba has no shield, owns his own ship and has a jet pack (wow).

Many people believe Star Wars comes out on top in this battle, but Master Chief’s weapons are much more powerful than those shown by the bounty hunter. This one makes it even at 2-2. Master Chief is 50-50.

So, those are the results of the survey – the people have spoken. In this tiny poll that we read on the Internet, Master Chief is your average kind of super hero, who is not guaranteed to win every single contest, unless he finds his weapon cheats or the story writers want him to, that is.

Astronomy – Important Dates Before Christ

February 15th, 2011 No comments

There is no uncertainty that astronomy is the oldest science and there is also no hesitation that astronomy was being studied by everyone, not only the wise men, thousands and thousands of years ago.

We do not understand exactly why they did it, but we can surmise that early man noticed a relationship between the weather and the stars, which were themselves not fully understood, of course.

Early man, probably even as far back as Neanderthal man, noticed the relationship between the weather and herd movements and crop growth, or at least fruit and nuts on local trees, if they did not have planted crops.

This means that people could see a connection between the stars and food availability. This relationship was probably ritualized into some sort of religion like early Wicca. Therefore, the stars became a very important part of the lives of every single person and it is likely that astrology and astronomy were widely intermixed by the average person.

However, there were also people who did not only use the stars as some vast celestial clock and who tried to make sense of the whole shebang. I am going to narrate below, eight of the most important dates or years in the history of astronomy before Christ walked on the Earth. In no way forget that they had nothing but an abacus to do there calculations and no telescopes, which came about two thousand years later.

585 BC: Thales of Miletus (c. 625- c. 547), a Greek, predicted a solar eclipse in Asia Minor purely on the basis of his observations and calculations. It was not a lucky guess!

c. 400 BC: the astronomer Oenopedes (5th. century). also a Greek, announces that the Earth is tilted on its axis with respect to the Sun.

352 BC: the Chinese report what they called a ‘guest star’, a supernova, which was the earliest reported sighting.

340 BC: The astronomer, Kidinnu (b. Babylon c. 379 BC) discovers the precession of the Equinoxes, ie the apparent change in the position of the stars caused by the Earth’s wobbling on its axis.

c. 300 BC: a ‘committee’ of Chinese astronomers compile star maps of the visible universe.

c. 240 BC: Chinese astronomers observe and make notes about Halley’s Comet. Also Eratosthenes of Cyrene (c. 276 – c.194 BC), a Greek, correctly calculate the Earth’s dimensions.

165 BC: Chinese astronomers notice sunspots for the first time.

c. 130 BC: the astronomer Hipparchus of Nicea (b. 147 BC), a Greek, correctly calculates the distance to the Earth’s Moon and also rediscovers the precession of the Equinoxes.

You will see from the dates above that clearly not everyone let nature and the stars govern their lives, as the common farmer or hunter did. Some men actually put pen to paper, but before pen and paper even existed, and tried to work out ‘why these manifestations took place?’.

These people must have been remarkable men to have worked these measurements out by calculation, observation by the naked eye and rationalization alone.

How Do You Buy Bouncy Houses, Bouncy Castles And Moonwalk?

December 15th, 2010 No comments

Why would one set of people, or one country call them bouncy houses, another call them bouncy castles and the industry call it moonwalking? It is an intriguing question, is it not, if you know what I am talking about. In fact, I mean those large inflatable children’s playthings that you see at church fetes and some children’s parties.

In America, where they were invented in the Sixties by John Scurlock of Louisiana. Like numerous inventions, the concept came to him by accident. Scurlock was an engineer experimenting with inflatable roofs for tennis courts and garages and one day he saw that a few of his employees were having great fun bouncing around on an inflated roof that was laying on the ground.

He had an thought and eleven years later, in 1968, his wife, Francis, was running the first bouncy house rental company in the world. Eight years later, he opened the world’s first dedicated bouncy house factory and ten years later again, their son, Frank, opened the world’s first fun park dedicated to only inflatable toys known as Fun Factory.

Lots more followed. Frank also took the bouncy house distribution and rental network nationwide. At first these inflatable toys did not have sides or a top, but this caused a couple of minor difficulties in that kids bounced off the deck onto the grass (or concrete) and the bouncing children were sometimes exposed to the full force of the sun, which put them art risk of exhaustion.

The current most well-liked bouncy house design of three inflatable walls and an inflatable roof came to pass fairly soon after the issues were identified. In fact there are variations on the answers that were found. In the USA, the sides of the moonwalk are usually made of netting supported by inflatable columns, whereas in the UK frequently three of the sides are inflatable. Observation is carried out from the front of the bouncy house.

These inflatable bouncy houses are mostly made of reinforced PVC, nylon or vinyl and the whole structure is filled with gas, which gives more support than air. A proper bouncy house is continually being pumped up by a fan or two so that minor punctures do not have an effect on the pleasure of the kids.

Cheaper types that are blown up once and left, a bit like a lido or airbed, are forbidden to be rented out in the USA and the UK although they can be employed for private parties at home.

Most Western countries have associations in place that regulate businesses that seek to manufacture or rent out bouncy houses. This is great for safety reasons, so if you are thinking of buying or hiring a bouncy house or bouncy castle for one of your parties, find out the name of the regulatory body first and check whether the company you like is registered.

In the USA and the UK, the names of the companies and their products are listed on the web site so that you can check quite quickly.

Oh, and why bouncy houses, bouncy castles and moonwalking? America has never had any castles and walking on the airbed feels as if you are walking with less gravity.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a variety topics, but is now concerned with the bouncy castles for sale. If you want to know more, please visit our web site at Bouncy House Rentals

How To Buy Safe Kids’ Toys

December 6th, 2010 No comments

We are lucky in the West, or most of it anyway, because the European Community, north America and Canada have strict regulations on how safe children’s toys must be. Despite this, there are lots of unscrupulous people about who will import cheap junk toys that could be dangerous to children, which means that anyone purchasing kids’ toys has to have their wits about them.

Having said that, the bigger shops do do their best to weed out the rogue importers and in fact most of the unsafe kids’ toys are found out about before they go on sale. Be wary in discount shops and outdoor markets though.

Once you get your safe children’s toys home, the time to be wary starts. This is because most accidents in the home involving toys do not happen to the person that the toys were purchased for. This is because adults trip over them. The stairs are the worst

The first thing that anyone buying toys must look for is the label. In the United States this is known as the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) and in Europe it is known as the Certificat European (CE). However, be cautious, because these labels can be forged very easily.

If you are not used to purchasing toys for children, the next indicator to look for is the age bracket for which the toy is intended. Typically the marker will give 5+ or 7-12, so you still have to exercise some judgment.

Educational toys are important to children and one of the best of these that you can build on as the child grows older is Lego. Duplo is the form of Lego that is most suitable to very young children. This is because Duplo building blocks are larger that the regular Lego building blocks so that small hands can manage them easily.

One of the worst dangers for very young children is choking. Young children put everything into their mouths but Lego has manufactured these Duplo building blocks too large to swallow.

As your child gets older, you can add to the Lego set right up to adulthood. There are Lego electric motors for teenagers and there are numerous adults that have continued using Lego well past their Twenties.

If however your child does have an accident with a toy, you should endeavor to find out how it happened immediately after seeing to your child. If the accident was naturally the child’s fault or someone else’s, you can report it if you like, but if the difficulty came about because of a problem or failure inherent in the toy, you ought to report it.

The first place to report the toy is to the local authorities and then you should inform the manager of the shop where you purchased it from. Keep the toy until the wheels of bureaucracy turn enough to get around to you

They will come back to you and you might save other children and their parents from going through the same problems that you did.

How To Measure Children’s Dolls For Clothing

December 2nd, 2010 No comments

Do you fancy manufacturing a doll’s dress for your own doll or a friends? Or how about some other articles of clothing like a trouser suit, pyjamas or a night shirt?

If you have never done it before, it is not that difficult to create a decent job of making dolls’ clothing, but you will have to take measurements, just as in real life.

It is a good idea to know the full length of the doll, but there are no garments that actually cover from head to toe unless you are designing a ghost’s fancy dress costume for the doll. Be careful with the chest measurement as well.

You cannot estimate it because dolls, both male and female, tend to have larger chests than proportion would imply that they should be. Merely look at Barbie and Ken, they could probably hold their breath for ten minutes!

Similarly, the inside leg measurements tend to be overstated and the waist way undersized. This is why it is so essential to measure the doll or if the dolls’ clothing is to be a surprise, measure one like it. From waist to the hem is enough for a skirt or from neck to the hemline for a dress.

If you are manufacturing trousers, you will need the inside leg and the outside leg to the waist band or hips, depending on the style. Then you will also require the waist or the hip measurement and the combined thigh measurement for skirts and dresses or individual thigh dimensions for trousers or slacks.

If you are measuring for a top or the top of a dress, you will need the measurements from the sternum to the centre of the armpit and from there to the centre of the other armpit.

In numerous ways, measuring a doll for clothing is equivalent to measuring humans, but on the other hand, the dimensions can have a great deal more tolerance because seams do not come under stress from movement with dolls. It is quite easy to just use common sense whilst measuring dolls for clothing, but practice will make perfect.

One of the best habits that you can get into is keeping notes and making sketches. After you have become skilled enough at manufacturing dolls’ clothing, you may be able to sell your produce and maybe even sell your pattern book too, if they are all your original concepts.

Tailoring or dressmaking for dolls can be great fun and children will certainly appreciate a new, unique costume for their doll, but then you will see that for yourself the first time you present your little niece, nephew or friend with one of your latest creations.

Tough Lessons Regarding The Funding Of The Public Schools And The Cartel

November 5th, 2010 No comments

There is definitely something wrong when a state has the resources to allocate at least $400,000 worth of funds to a single classroom yet the educational capability of its students is dismally low. Is it some sort of educational cartel? Seems like it.

The statistics point to a very alarming result. At least three-fourths of high school kids who make it to college need to attend remedial courses in order to cope up. However, there is a deeper story as to how the current public school system contributes to this sorry state. As it is, the picture is not pretty at all.

A saying goes that the youth are the hope of tomorrow. However, there is a small problem with this particular statement. How can there be a tomorrow if the youth aren’t well equipped enough to handle the challenges ahead because of sub-standard schooling? It makes for a very provocative thought indeed.

Take for example The New Jersey Education Association, whose responsibility it is to ensure quality education for the students of New Jersey. This group is a teachers union with lots of political clout and influence. Unfortunately, the union has gained a notorious reputation for merely enriching its members over properly educating the students under their care. Allegations of misusing state funds for personal enrichment is just one of the numerous problems attributed to this group. This is a group, which acts more like a cartel than a respectable body of educators.

What follows is a short detail of one of the recently discovered exposes involving one of its members. One school district secretary was found to have been making more than what she should be receiving. The sum amounts to a staggering $180,000 annually. How did this happen? It is quite simple. Closeness to the education cartel is to blame.

When the children’s minds and opportunity for learning are sacrificed for the benefit of the ones wielding power, it truly bodes ill for the educational system indeed. This is coupled with the fact that even incompetent teachers cannot be removed or replaced simply because they are close to the said group. Parenthetically, untainted and/or qualified educators who have had the courage to go against the status quo found themselves being harassed or even dismissed from the job.

This does not bode well for the public school system at all. The union acts like a money-hungry cartel intent only with siphoning state funds to the detriment of quality education. It is a wonder that this type of corruption has not been exposed and the perpetrators sanctioned already.

However, not all is lost. There are charter schools whose mission is to uplift the quality of education and they have done a consistently good job in outperforming the state-run district schools. One would think they would be receiving better state or government support for their efforts but the sad case is the opposite. The very same educational bureaucrats make it hard for these charter schools to progress any further simply because they are a threat to their well-entrenched positions. At this rate, more young minds will continue to languish in substandard education unless the tax-paying public does something about this.

Hudson Reporter: The Cartel documentary explores NJ schools. A film by Bob Bowdon.

Secrets About The Collapsing Of The Public Schools

October 27th, 2010 No comments

There’s money to be made in education, argues Bob Bowdon, but exclusively when you trim away the unprofitable bits, like dependable teachers. In his docudrama “The Cartel,” New Jersey television news reporter Bowdon shines a light on the corruptness and avarice that has resulted in the disappearance of so much taxpayer money in that state. The numbers divulge the tale: $17,000 spent per pupil, and at hand’s simply a 39% reading proficiency rate, it’s tricky to argue that there’s a crisis underway, but harder to concur on a resolution.

On the one side is the massive Jersey teachers union and shadowy school officials, who ensure that, as Bowden points out in his movie, 90 cents of every tax dollar go for other expenses, including six figure incomes for school administrators and, in a staggering example, a school board secretary who makes $180,000. On the other side are the supporters of charter schools — private schools which can operate outside the influence of what Bowden calls The Cartel. Bowden makes much of the fact that it’s nearly impossible for a teacher to be fired, a safety net that does little to encourage hard work in those teachers who know they have a career regardless of how many of the three Rs they teach — if any.

“The documentary examines lots of distinctive aspects of public education, tenure, funding, patronage drops, corruption –meaning theft — vouchers and charter schools,” says Bowdon. “And as such it sort of serves as a swift-moving primer on all of the hot topics amongst the education-reform effort.”

“The movie first appeared on the festival circuit in summer 2009, appearing in theaters countrywide a year later. Hopefully it will get a rise, and not be overshadowed, by the more recently released documentary “Waiting for Superman,” by “An Inconvenient Truth” director Davis Guggenheim. Bowdon sees the films as complementary, and hopes that “Superman,” with its human-interest approach, draws more notice to his own, which focuses on public policy. “My film is the left-brained version, more analytical,” Bowdon says, “‘Waiting for Superman’ is more the right-brained treatment.”

It is undoubtedly analytical, couching its arguments in an assessment of how the money is being spent, or misspent. But that isn’t to say the film is without heart. Bowdon makes sure his eye is continuously on the people affected, chiefly the inner-city students trapped in a disordered system. The weeping face of a young girl who learns she was not selected for a place at a charter school makes its own potent debate for the unsatisfactory failure of a state’s education system.

And though there’s an satire in this sort of public depravity happening in a state famed for its organized crime, it’s obvious that this is not an isolated collapse. Bowdon’s film illustrates a local problem, but any watcher will spot the systems of system failure in their own state’s schools. The one he seems to be most behind is the charter schools, which take the reins from the unions and give them back to the taxpayer. But he also makes it reliable that those in power are going to be unwilling to give it up without a struggle.

NJ paradox: Piles of cash, failing schools in The Cartel, a film by Bob Bowdon.
